HRPO stands for Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled. It refers to hot-rolled steel that has undergone the process of pickling (acid-wash cleaning) to eliminate the surface scales and impurities formed during high-temperature rolling. Immediately after pickling, a thin layer of protective oil is electrostatically applied to prevent oxidation and atmospheric corrosion.
In standard hot rolling, carbon steel is heated above its recrystallization temperature (typically exceeding 1100°C) and passed through rollers. While this makes the metal highly shapeable, the exposure of red-hot steel to ambient oxygen creates a hard, iron-oxide coating known as mill scale. Mill scale creates an uneven surface texture, hinders downstream paint or coating adhesion, and accelerates tool wear in stamping processes.
